When I was a kid I was only allowed to have my peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on wheat bread. I still like wheat bread, and eat it nearly 100% of the time, but here's what I love about being a grown-up...I can totally buy white bread if I want to! And I know I should only eat wheat bread, since it is full of fiber and whole grains, but oh how delicious and forbidden a PB&J can be on soft white bread! I promise not to eat it every day, but today being the first day of school, I treated my kids to a sandwich on white bread (and one for me too).
Sometimes I see my clients get stuck in their box of "I want an 8X10". Can I just suggest that you are a grown up now, and you can have that white bread every once and a while? There are so many sizes to choose from, and an 8X10 isn't the most flattering size. Even an 8X12 is a far better choice because it looks so much better on your wall. An even better size is 16X24. Have you ever tried watching your favorite movie squeezed onto a small screen, only to be disappointed? Watching your favorite movie on the big screen, a wide screen, makes much more of an impact! The same is true for portraits. Choose one that you LOVE, and enlarge it! Too many portraits on the wall can clutter your home, but one amazing portrait can be art for your home that will fill you with joy every time you see it.
Worried about "missing" those other great images from your session? How about an album? This enables you to keep the images you love, without cluttering your walls, and costing you an arm & a leg. While albums are expensive, they last forever, and don't limit you. And they are still a more cost-effective way to keep the artwork of your family, while preserving space. A high-quality, archival album can be preserved and enjoyed for generations.
The moral of the story? Think outside of the box, choose one amazing, inspiring portrait for an enlargement with impact - keep the rest of the nearly-amazing portraits in an archival quality album. Once in a while, eat some white bread for the sheer enjoyment of it!
